LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A summer tradition that brings students and deputies together is returning, as registration opens for Camp D.A.R.E. 2026 in St. Mary’s County. Hosted by the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the free week-long program offers incoming fifth and sixth grade students a chance to build leadership skills, form friendships and connect with law enforcement through hands-on activities and real-world learning experiences.
Set for July 27 through July 31, 2026, the camp will run daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Leonardtown Middle School, located at 24015 Point Lookout Road. Open primarily to incoming fifth and sixth grade students, officials say incoming fourth graders may also be able to attend if space allows.

Throughout the week, campers step into an experience that blends fun with purpose — where mornings might begin with interactive lessons and afternoons turn into hands-on demonstrations, outdoor games and team challenges. Along the way, students learn how to make confident, responsible decisions, gaining tools to handle peer pressure and better understand the real-life consequences of drugs and alcohol.
The D.A.R.E. program, first launched in 1983 through a partnership between the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Unified School District, has grown into a nationally recognized effort focused on prevention and education. In St. Mary’s County, the Sheriff’s Office reintroduced the program during the 2007–2008 school year, bringing certified deputies into classrooms to teach lessons centered on communication, decision-making and building trust between youth and law enforcement.

Over time, D.A.R.E. has evolved far beyond its early “just say no” message into a hands-on, real-world program that helps students build confidence, navigate everyday challenges and make smart decisions that last well beyond the classroom.
The program is free to attend, with lunch provided by the Mechanicsville Optimist Club, making it an easy and exciting summer opportunity for families. The camp welcomes a broad group of students, giving kids a chance to meet new friends, try new experiences and step into a week filled with learning, fun and discovery.
Campers get a front-row look at public safety in action, from K-9 demonstrations and emergency response team presentations to visits from the Maryland State Police Trooper 7 helicopter. Firefighters and EMS crews bring their trucks and equipment, giving students the chance to explore, ask questions and see what it takes to serve their community.

Between those moments, the energy stays high with team-building games, outdoor activities and chances to connect with new friends. Whether it’s working together to solve a challenge, cooling off during a summer activity or simply sharing laughs, the experience is designed to leave a lasting impression.
Junior And Senior Counselor Opportunities
Camp D.A.R.E. also offers opportunities for students and community members to take on a bigger role in the experience.
- Junior Counselors (ages 12–14): Assist instructors, support daily activities and help mentor younger campers.
- Senior Counselors (high school students): Take on leadership roles, assist with camp operations and serve as role models throughout the week.
These roles give older students a chance to build confidence, strengthen communication skills and give back, all while helping shape the experience for the next group of campers.
Organizers say the impact of Camp D.A.R.E. is felt long after the week ends, as relationships built during the program help strengthen trust between young people and law enforcement across the community.
