The Maryland Department of Natural Resources is now seeking proposals from local governments looking to invigorate their coastal communities and waterfront economies.
Municipalities and counties in the coastal zone are eligible to apply for one-year grants of up to $60,000 through the departmentโs Working Waterfronts Program.
โThe prosperity of marine-dependent businesses and industries is vital to maintaining our stateโs rich maritime culture, economy and identity,โ Natural Resources Secretary Mark Belton said. โWith these grants, we can provide the necessary assistance and expertise for our coastal communities to protect these defining characteristics.โ
Now in its third year, the program provides financial and technical support to preserve and protect existing and historic waterfront communities throughout Maryland. Ideal proposals will target waterfront planning, maritime zoning, and develop new programs in support of maritime industries and employment.
In 2016, the department chose the municipalities of Cambridge, Oxford and St. Michaels as grant recipients.
Interested applicants should submit proposals here. Total requests may not exceed $60,000; matching funds are not required. Application deadline is June 30.
The grants are made possible by a partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
