LA PLATA, Md. — Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) fourth- and fifth-grade students spent a recent Saturday calculating, dividing and summing up their interest in numbers during the Elementary Mathematics Challenge.

Held April 11 at Theodore G. Davis Middle School, the annual competition is sponsored by SMECO to boost interest in mathematics among young students by making the subject fun and engaging. Each year, SMECO sponsors competitions in Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties.

Elementary math team are made up of fourth and fifth graders who show an interest in the subject. Students practice during the school year with their coaches and teammates working on above-grade level material and other skills such as collaboration, active listening and perseverance.

During the challenge, students participated in an individual mathematics assessment, and select team members advanced to represent their schools in the group challenge at Saturday’s challenge. Team’s scores were the result of both the individual scores and the teams’ challenge scores.
