Mark Arness (Congressional District 5) Get Real With Southern Maryland Politics

CALVERT COUNTY, Md. — A Democratic candidate in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District is making his case to voters in a recent installment of “Get Real with Southern Maryland Politics.” Mark Arness discussed his background as a physician, his priorities for the district, and his concerns about the direction of federal policy with host Chris Hill.

Arness, who has practiced medicine in Maryland since 1990 and spent more than 20 years working in Southern Maryland, said his campaign is rooted in protecting both patients and providers.

“I’m disturbed by some of the policies of the current administration, particularly when it comes to medical practice,” Arness said, arguing that government actions are increasingly impacting health care decisions.

Maryland’s 5th Congressional District stretches across five counties, including parts of Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland communities such as Calvert County, Charles County, and St. Mary’s County. Arness emphasized his local roots, saying he believes voters in the region may connect with a candidate who has lived and worked in the area for decades.

“I think I’m the only candidate who’s truly from Southern Maryland,” he said.

During the interview, Arness also highlighted the importance of supporting the region’s military presence and improving services for veterans, pointing to installations across the district as critical to the local economy and national defense.

The candidate did not shy away from national issues, offering sharp criticism of Donald Trump and federal health leadership, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr. He raised concerns about tariffs, constitutional rights, and what he described as a broader erosion of democratic norms.

On local challenges, Arness pointed to housing affordability as a growing crisis in Southern Maryland, saying rising costs are putting pressure on residents across the region.

“Everything has gotten more expensive, more difficult, more unaffordable,” he said.
