CHAPTICO, Md. — Finding pleasurable outdoor activities in this unrelenting hot weather can be tough. However, there are still a few options that are worth trying. Goldpetal Farms, located in Chaptico, offers a variety of activities, including taking photos, enjoying a pleasant picnic, painting pictures in the barn and, of course, cutting your own little bouquet of flowers. Here’s a quick rundown of what fun to expect on your visit.
The zinnias and sunflowers are in full bloom, and they are absolutely breathtaking right now. When you first walk into the barn, you are given your shears and a pail to put your selection of flowers in. The admission is $15, and individual sunflowers are $1 per stem, while zinnias are $0.50 each. The zinnia colors are gorgeous, featuring fiery reds, honeycomb orange and a variety of shades of pinks and purples. So, don’t worry — you will easily find flowers that you fall in love with. The farther you walk through the field of zinnias, the lovelier it gets. Butterflies are constantly fluttering through the field, making this scene even more peaceful and tranquil. Walking through these paths, surrounded by flowers swaying in the wind on a warm, sunny day, is a must-do during this summer season.
The sunflower field is the perfect spot for taking photos. Currently, they are impressively tall, surrounding you as you walk along the paths, making it feel straight out of a movie. However, be aware of the abundance of bees that pollinate these sunflowers — but that is what makes this area so incredible; it is full of life. Since this area is mostly secluded, there is minimal noise besides the comforting sounds of wildlife.
In the corner of the barn, there is a charming area with easels and watercolors for painting. Everything is provided, and it is included in your admission fee. The ambiance of the barn is quiet, calming and inviting for all attendees. They hang a few of the finished paintings up for everyone to see. It is a great activity for kids, and it’s perfect for a quick break from the sun.
As mentioned in Goldpetal’s post, they are currently growing 30 tobacco plants in honor of the farmers who have impacted Southern Maryland. These crops are located near the maze barn and will bloom in early to mid-August. This will be an excellent opportunity to recognize a loved one who has made significant contributions to Southern Maryland’s tobacco industry. You can bring them here and have their photo taken free of charge.
