An Easter Week tradition in Calvert County was held Friday, April 18 on Solomons Island. Members of several local churches met at St. Peter’s Chapel and walked north to Our Lady Star of the Sea.
The ritual, marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, is an effort of the local churches united under the banner of SMILE Inc. SMILE, which stands for “Service Makes Individuals’ Lives Exciting.”
The organization has held the “Way-of-the-Cross Procession” for over 20 years.
Church ministers take turns carrying the heavy wooden cross from the tiny Episcopalian parish chapel to the old Catholic Church on a hill. A noon hour ecumenical service featuring songs and readings is held at Our Lady Star of the Sea.
