Governor Martin Oโ€™Malley announced Board of Public Works approval of local-side Program Open Space funding for five recreational improvement projects in Frederick, Garrett and St. Maryโ€™s Counties.

โ€œMarylandโ€™s local parks and recreation areas offer children opportunities for outdoor exploration and create places of gathering for entire communities,โ€ said Governor Martin Oโ€™Malley โ€œThrough these Program Open Space projects, we are enhancing our way of life in sustainable ways to be enjoyed by all ages.โ€

$276,408 will fund the fifth phase of the Three Notch Trail in St. Maryโ€™s County. Once complete, this span of three miles from Laurel to Mechanicsville will support recreational activities such as running, horseback riding, biking and rollerblading.ย 

Since 2007, Governor O’Malley and the BPW have preserved more thanย 20,752 acres of natural areas for public recreation and watershed and wildlife protection across Maryland through Program Open Space.ย Since its inception in 1969, the program has provided funding for acquisition ofย 340,463 acres of Marylandโ€™s landscape.ย  Most Maryland residents live within 15 minutes of an open space or recreational area funded by POS.
