NEWBURG, Md. – To kick off Black History Month for students at Dr. Thomas L. Higdon Elementary School, Governor Wes Moore sent a special video to prepare students for all of the exciting lessons and individuals they will learn about over the next four weeks.

“I want to take some time out today to tell you how proud I am of each and every one of you and also your amazing teachers. So, today marks the first day of Black History Month, and throughout the next four weeks, you’ll be introduced to incredible individuals who’ve made big contributions to the emancipation of African Americans. This is such an important topic for you all to learn about that your assistant principal and my friend, Mr. Hill, wanted me to send some extra encouraging words ahead of all the lessons that you’ll take in,” said Moore.

Moore went on to talk about how he and Mr. Hill became friends because they are both members of the mighty Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, which is the first fraternity of college-educated black men in the United States.

“Our members include people you’ll learn about this month including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Supreme Court’s first African-American Justice brother third Good Marshall. As your school year goes on, embody what it means to be a great Husky for your community by being friendly, attentive, dignified, and respectful. Have a happy Black History Month and continue to have Higdon husky Pride.”
