Grocery Grab Gone Wrong: Two Men Charged After Indian Head Store Theft

INDIAN HEAD, Md. — Two men from southern Maryland have been charged in connection with a theft and property damage incident at a grocery store in Indian Head, according to court records.

Police identified the suspects as Darmarius Leon Smothers, 36, of Accokeek, and Kurt Douglas Woods, 40, of Bryans Road. Charging documents state the incident occurred on Jan. 19, 2026, at the Oasis Fresh Foods Market along Indian Head Highway.

According to a statement of probable cause, Charles County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the store after receiving a report of a theft in progress. Store employees reported that merchandise was taken without payment. Police later determined the stolen merchandise was damaged and rendered unsellable.

Deputies located suspects matching the provided descriptions nearby. Investigators allege Woods failed to comply with lawful commands from deputies and attempted to flee on foot before being detained. Smothers was also located and taken into custody during the investigation.

Authorities determined the total value of the stolen merchandise was less than $100 and that damage to store property was assessed at under $1,000. The recovered items were deemed unsellable and could not be returned to inventory.

Smothers was charged with theft of property valued at less than $100 and malicious destruction of property valued under $1,000, both misdemeanors. Woods faces three misdemeanor charges, including theft of property valued at less than $100, malicious destruction of property under $1,000, and failure to obey a reasonable and lawful order.

Court records show Smothers was released on his own recognizance following his arrest. Woods was initially held on a percentage bond before being released on his own recognizance following a bail review hearing on Jan. 20.

Both men are scheduled for a trial-related officer scheduling hearing on March 6 in Charles County District Court.
