At approximately 3:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 27, a driver traveling on Mt. Harmony Road in Owings noticed a possible chemical leak and called authorities. Units from North Beach, Dunkirk and Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Departments along with Hazardous Materials equipment and personnel responded to the scene.
Units arrived at the residence to find that there had been a fuel leak as the result of a faulty tank. The owner of the home in the 1000 block of East Mt. Harmony Road reported that the tank had been full and it was estimated that from between 250 to 275 gallons of fuel had leaked out.
Emergency and HazMat personnel dug a trench in order to contain and control the flow of the leaked fuel. After completing the trench, absorbent was added to to soak up the spilled liquid before it could contaminate ground water and enter any water source.
The site will continue to be monitored to ensure all hazardous materials have been cleaned up and that there is no further danger to the environment.
