High-Impact Weather System Brings Gusty Winds, Freezing Temperatures To Maryland

CALIFORNIA, Md. — Maryland residents are bracing for a high-impact weather system expected to bring freezing temperatures, gusty winds, and potential hazards through Thursday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Wind Advisory for Thursday, warning of sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 50 mph from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The gusty winds could dislodge unsecured objects, break tree limbs, and cause localized power outages. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, with overnight lows dipping into the mid-20s in many parts of Southern Maryland. Combined with the wind, these conditions will create bitterly cold wind chills.

Extended Forecast for Southern Maryland

  • Thursday: Windy and cold with highs in the upper 30s. Winds at 20–25 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. Overnight lows in the mid-20s.
  • Friday: Sunny but brisk. Highs near 40°F, lows in the low 30s.
  • Saturday and Sunday: Partly cloudy with highs in the mid-40s. Temperatures fall to the low 30s overnight.
  • Monday to Wednesday: Gradual warming trend with highs reaching the low 50s by midweek.

Mariners Face Hazardous Conditions

Gale Warnings are also in effect across the southern Chesapeake Bay and lower tidal Potomac River beginning this evening and continuing through 7 p.m. Thursday. Mariners are advised to avoid the water during this period, as winds will create dangerous conditions.

Stay Prepared

Authorities are encouraging residents to take precautions:

  • Secure outdoor objects such as holiday decorations and garbage bins.
  • Dress warmly and limit time outdoors to avoid wind chill-related health risks.
  • Prepare for power outages by charging devices and keeping emergency supplies on hand.
