As freezing temperatures continue across Maryland, State Highway Administration (SHA) crews ready for snowfall expected to begin on the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland. The approach of this storm differs from most Maryland has experienced this year with the greatest snow accumulations expected to the east and south of central Maryland.
“Our crews are preparing for the storm by fueling up vehicles, performing safety checks and loading salt so we can respond as soon as snow begins to fall,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. “SHA reminds all travelers to be ‘road ready’ by filling vehicles with gas and other fluids, checking tires and charging mobile phones. A break down in these extreme temperatures is very dangerous.”
Yesterday afternoon, maintenance personnel completed anti-icing operations spreading liquid salt brine along US 50 and US 13 in the lower Shore and are now monitoring the weather. Crews in other parts of the State will also monitor and have road crews available to respond to plow and salt as needed.
Truck drivers may use one of SHA’s emergency parking locations for safe refuge during the storm should there be significant snow accumulations. These locations are available on SHA’s interactive map at http://roads.maryland.gov/pages/emergencytruckparking.aspx?pageid=856. SHA emergency and maintenance personnel will manage the statewide storm response at the operations center near BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.
