LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – A small group of local art enthusiasts is bringing a message of hope to their community through the “Hopeful Project,” set to be unveiled officially this Friday, April 19, 2024, at 7:00 PM.
In 2022, St. Mary’s Community Development Corp. was approached with the idea to spread optimism in Lexington Park. The concept was initiated by Charlie Hewitt, a renowned artist from St. Mary’s County now residing in Portland, Maine. Hewitt’s “Hopeful Project” aims to stimulate unity, togetherness, and positivity.
Preparations are in full swing, as seen in the photos. The new installation is located at the Church of the Ascension at 21641 Great Mills Road, Lexington Park, MD. In conjunction with the unveiling, the newly-opened, Patuxent Harvest Market+ located right next door will host a special Market day from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The project is the result of the combined efforts of many individuals, including Church of the Ascension, Charlie Hewitt, Katie Watts, Tom & Helen Daugherty, Tom Watts, Margaret Sawyer, Todd Morgan, Frank Taylor, Jane Rowe, Mark Cullison, and the St. Mary’s County Arts Council.
The Hopeful Project invites everyone to join them in this celebration of hope and unity.
