La Plata, September 5, 2017 – The Charles County Public Libraries’ Adopt-a-Book Program will provide essential funding to support the continued growth of our collection, and preserve it for future generations. Book adoptions are an excellent way to commemorate an occasion, celebrate a milestone, or honor a great achievement while supporting the mission of the Charles County Public Library. When a customer “adopts” a book, they will be acknowledged via a physical bookplate in their adopted book.

For the first ever Charles County Public Library Adopt a Book selections, we decided to have a little fun with the theme First. The books we selected for adoption were all the first to do something. This could be the first book in a series, like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” or “The Song of Ice and Fire”. It could be the first to win an award, like “The Handmaid’s Tale” or “Caps for Sale”. It could be the author being the first to accomplish something, like Toni Morrison or William Gibson. It could even be the first time a word or phrased was used, like 1984’s inspiring the word “Orwellian.” These books are the first in many reader’s hearts and we are excited to offer them as the first books to be available for adoption (but certainly not the last!)

Books up for “adoption” will be on display (and adoptable) during a “sneak peek” reception held at the Waldorf West Branch on Saturday, September 23 at noon. Adopt-a-Book donations are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
