Charles Countyโs Indian Head Rail Trail has been selected as the Rails-to-Trails Conservancyโs National Trail of the Month for July 2011. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy chose the Countyโs trail from among the 1,600 rail-tail conversion pathways that currently exist in North America.
The Indian Head Rail Trail is a 13-mile recreational trail that connects the Town of Indian Head to Route 301 in White Plains. Originally used by the U.S. Navy for railroad transportation, the abandoned corridor was converted in 2009 to what has become an extremely popular bike trail. Since opening, the County estimates that nearly 200,000 cyclists, hikers, runners, and nature enthusiasts have visited this linear park. The Indian Head Rail Trail not only provides residents with outdoor recreational opportunities, but has become an important draw as a regional tourism destination.
The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that serves as a national voice for the creation of recreational trails and preservation of natural resources. Through the Rails-to-Trails Conservancyโs website (www.RailstoTrails.org), blog, and print media, the Indian Head Rail Trail will gain tremendous, positive exposure and promotion for both Charles County and the State of Maryland.ย
