Leonardtown, MD – The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County have approved the promotion of Tony Jones to Communications Director.

Jones has served as Public Information Officer since September 2011. Since then he has led the transformation of the county’s public information effort, launching county government’s Social Media venues (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr) and enhancing the county’s overall communications strategy. He has spearheaded changes in televised coverage of meetings and special events on St. Mary’s County Government TV 95.

Jones has an extensive background in communications and broadcast journalism. Prior to arriving in St. Mary’s County, he served as the North Carolina spokesman for the 2010 Census and Writer/Editor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). His broadcast journalism career included stints with TV stations in Baton Rouge, New York City, Raleigh, Mobile, Al and Greenville, NC. He has also served as a Broadcast News Workshop adjunct instructor with New York University’s School of Professional Studies.

“The commissioners congratulate Tony on his promotion. The work he has done since 2011 has been excellent and he is deserving of the promotion,” said Commissioner President Randy Guy. “We have enjoyed working with him and look forward to continuing to do so.”

The promotion is effective July 1.
