Joseph “Joe” Francis Thomas, 78, of Waldorf, Maryland, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2026. He was born on September 28, 1947, in Washington, D.C., to the late Samuel and Ellen Thomas.
Joe proudly enlisted in the United States Navy in 1964 and served during the Vietnam era. He was awarded the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the National Defense Service Medal in recognition of his service to his country.
On November 26, 1974, Joe married the love of his life, Alice Hoelscher. Through their marriage, Joe became a loving and devoted father figure to Alice’s daughter, Tracy Rowe of Waldorf, Maryland. He helped raise Tracy and loved her as his own, creating a bond that remained an important part of his life.
Joe worked as a carpenter for more than 40 years, a career he took great pride in. He truly enjoyed the work he did and the life he was able to build through it.
In his free time, Joe loved spending time outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and crabbing from his boat and cherished the time spent on the water. He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan and loved watching the games.
Joe especially enjoyed watching America’s Got Talent on television. When he became bedridden, he found comfort in assembling wooden puzzles. Even as his eyesight began to fade, he continued to persevere.
Joe had a special place in his heart for his four great-granddaughters, Julianna, Olivia, Madison, and Luna. Even when he became bedridden, he never stopped spoiling his girls. He loved buying them things and making sure they had everything they needed, always finding his own special ways to show them just how much they meant to him.
Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice Hoelscher; his parents, Samuel and Ellen Thomas; and his brother, James Thomas.
He is survived by his daughter, Tracy Rowe, and her husband, Thomas Rowe, of Waldorf, Maryland; his grandchildren, Jessica Russell (Stephen) and Jacob Rowe (Lizzy); his four great-granddaughters, Julianna, Olivia, Madison, and Luna; his best friend, Johnny Warring; and many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Joe was a man with a strong personality who lived life in his own way. He was known for his independence, determination, and ability to speak his mind. Those who knew him best will remember his unique sense of humor, his strong-willed nature, and the many stories and memories he leaves behind.
Joe will be deeply missed by his family, his best friend Johnny, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he may be gone, the memories, stories, and love he leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him. Rest easy, Joe. You will be missed, you will be remembered, and you will never be forgotten.
