LOTHIAN, Md. — Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, located just outside Calvert County in Lothian, is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary with the Music by the Marsh event on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 2 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 per person, and kids 5 and under are free. Registration is required for the event.
Guests will have access to the sanctuary’s grounds and regular attractions as well as special activities and shows. According to the official event page, the event will feature live music, art and archaeology exhibits, a photo booth, lawn games, pollinator garden and meadow walks, and food trucks. There will also be plenty of events for kids: touch a truck, a haystack climb, and crafts are just a few to look forward to. There will be limited seating available, but organizers encourage people to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets and picnics. Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks and Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary are hosting the event.

Though the event is certainly kid-friendly, families with young children should take note that the boardwalk on the marsh only has railing on one side. Little ones can stick to other activities or stay close to an adult.
Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary is located on 1,700 acres in Lothian. For the last 40 years, the sanctuary has been dedicated to protecting the unique habitat and wildlife along the Patuxent River through education, research, stewardship and volunteering.
The sanctuary’s Two Run Trail area just reopened in August. Its website invites people to explore this newly rebuilt trail and to keep an eye out for the 300+ bird species living in the wetlands. September is turtle hatching season, so visitors to the sanctuary should be on the lookout when walking and driving.

And after the 40th anniversary event, there’s plenty more to explore. The sanctuary has more than 19 miles of trails and 2,000 acres of tidal freshwater marsh for kayaking and paddling, and recent visitors loved the peace and quiet, the variety of trails to explore, and getting to see birds, muskrat and beavers in their natural habitats.
Alcohol and pets are not permitted at the event, and no refunds will be given for participant cancellations or no-shows. For questions, call 410-222-8006 or email jugbay@aacounty.org.
