Leonardtown’s First Friday celebration, August 6, brought many out to enjoy the festivities on and around the square. Many bought or brought their copy of Dishing Up Maryland and had it signed by author Lucie L. Snodgrass. Chef Loic Jaffres of Café Des Artistes teamed up with Richard Pelz of Circle C Oyster Ranch for a dish featured in the book and offered samples along with Ridge Market Chef Robert Chan’s Chinese cuisine for free.
Businesses and restaurants were buzzing, offering great specials, samples and friendly service. Fortune’s Turn provided live music for the crowd and was later joined on stage by Gov. Martin O’Malley, who performed two tunes with them.
O’Malley announced Mary Cox as the winning ticket-holder for a great prize package including a Mennonite-crafted leather portmanteau filled with wine and gifts, Courtesy of Leonardtown Business Association, St. Mary’s County Tourism, and Commissioners of Leonardtown.
Many businesses like Big Larry’s Comic Book Café were busy late into the evening. One young lady told TheBAYNET.com it was her first visit to a Leonardtown First Friday event, but she planned to come more often in the future.
Gov. O’Malley stopped by the Front Porch and visited Fenwick Street stores before telling the crowd gathered on the square, “God Bless St. Mary’s, God Bless Leonardtown and God Bless our troops.”
