LEONARDTOWN, Md. — What began as a routine proclamation quickly turned into a celebration of connection, curiosity and community during the April 14 meeting of the St. Mary’s County Commissioners, where officials recognized National Library Week with a nod to one of the county’s most anticipated upcoming events — a massive book sale expected to draw readers from across the region.
Commissioner Eric Colvin opened the proclamation by highlighting the timing of the recognition, noting that a “giant book sale” is just around the corner — an event that underscores the enduring role of libraries as more than just places to borrow books.
“St. Mary’s County is home to three public library facilities and one mobile library,” Colvin said, emphasizing their role as accessible spaces that foster connection and strengthen community ties.
More Than A Library
The proclamation, officially designating April 19–25, 2026, as National Library Week in St. Mary’s County, painted a broader picture of what modern libraries provide.
Beyond shelves of books, the St. Mary’s County Library system connects residents to essential technology — including broadband internet, public computers and training — resources that are critical for education, job access and lifelong learning.

Library leaders echoed that message during the presentation.
“We are more than just a wall of books in a building,” said Deputy Director Mary Anne Bowman. “We are community centers.”

From early literacy programs that help children build vocabulary and reading skills to classes and multimedia offerings for all ages, the library system continues to evolve to meet the needs of a growing and diverse population.

Officials also highlighted the role libraries play during both everyday life and times of crisis — serving as trusted spaces where residents can access information, resources and support.
A Cornerstone Of Community
Throughout the proclamation, commissioners emphasized the library’s role as a cornerstone of democracy, promoting the free exchange of ideas and ensuring equitable access to information for all residents.
That mission extends beyond physical locations through outreach efforts, including the county’s mobile library, which brings services directly into neighborhoods.

Library staff and volunteers were also recognized for their dedication, with multiple team members in attendance representing branches in Leonardtown, Lexington Park and Charlotte Hall.
“We are absolutely blessed to work with an incredible staff and all of our volunteers,” said Amy Ford, branch manager of the Lexington Park Library. “We wouldn’t be able to do it without their coordination.”

Upcoming Event: Giant Book Sale
As National Library Week approaches, one event is already generating buzz — the library’s annual book sale, scheduled for April 24–26 at the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds.
Spring Book Sale Chair Danita Boonchaisri invited the community to attend, promising a wide selection.
“We like to say $100,000 worth of books,” she said with a smile. “There’s something for everyone. I can guarantee that.”

The sale, a favorite among local readers, not only offers affordable books across genres and age groups but also supports library programs and services throughout the county.
Residents are encouraged to visit the library system’s Facebook page for additional details on times, locations and featured items.
A Call To Connect
In closing, commissioners encouraged residents to take part in National Library Week by visiting their local branch, exploring digital resources or attending programs.
Whether through a quiet afternoon with a book, a child’s first storytime or a community event like the upcoming book sale, St. Mary’s County Library continues to serve as a hub for learning, connection and opportunity.
As Bowman summed it up, the library’s strength lies not just in its collections — but in the people it brings together.
