During the workshop, which was held in the Boyden Gallery at the College, Clifton explained her creative process to the attending students, and talked about what inspired her to write. She also read from her work, critiqued poetry written by the students, and offered them encouragement with their writing. In the workshop that followed Coleman asked the kids to compose shorts poems and read them to the group.

To facilitate the studentsโ€™ writing between sessions,ย The Arts Alliance of St. Maryโ€™s College provided journals for each participant to record their poetry in. A second workshop for the group is scheduled for January 29.

โ€œThe poetry workshop was very successfulย and extremely challenging for the student participants,โ€ said Susan McNeill, Outreach Coordinator and Steering Committee Member of the Arts Alliance.
