LEONARDTOWN, Md. – On February 2, 2024, Lt. Governor Aruna Miller along with Secretary Jake Duke and several other members of the Governor’s Cabinet visited Leonardtown to officially declare it a Main Street destination.
According to Maryland.gov, Main Street Maryland is a comprehensive downtown revitalization program created in 1998 by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. The program strives to strengthen the economic potential of Marylandโs traditional main streets and neighborhoods. Designated Main Street Maryland communities have committed to improving the economy, appearance, and image of their traditional downtown business districts. To accomplish Main Street goals, the department has partnered with the National Trust for Historic Preservationโs National Main Street Center, which developed the Main Street Approach for community-driven, comprehensive revitalization.

“Leonardtown is very excited to be a Main Street designee,” Leonardtown’s Town Administrator, Laschelle McKay, told The BayNet.
“We have been working very hard over the last couple of decades to revitalize the downtown. We have made huge strides and believe this program will help keep the momentum of the downtown going. Programs like our previous four rounds of Faรงade Grants will continue under this program with a fifth round this year. We will also continue implementing our downtown and waterfront plans that we have been working on since 2019.”

This was just a small part of a very exciting day for St. Mary’s County as the Moore-Miller administration visited various locations in the area and also held a special cabinet meeting.
Groups visited Clover Hill Dairy Farm, the Tech Center, Garvey Senior Center, and Naval Air Station Patuxent River.

I love how much this governor pays attention to Southern Md. I’m sure he is reminded of the bridge every time he comes down. Thanks Gov. Moore!
