The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the deliberate destruction of a mailbox and its contents at a residence in St. Mary’s County, the agency reported.
According to Dfm. John Nelson, the incident happened Saturday, March 30 at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Colton Point Road in Avenue.
“[An] Unknown suspect [or suspects] placed an incendiary device inside the mailbox,” Nelson stated. “The device ignited, causing the mail inside to be burned and destroyed.”
No injuries were reported. The blaze was discovered by the homeowner. No firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The estimated loss is $25.
No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the state fire marshal’s Southern Regional Office at 443-550-6833.
