The Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office is investigating the deliberate destruction of a mailbox and its contents at a residence in St. Maryโ€™s County, the agency reported.

According to Dfm. John Nelson, the incident happened Saturday, March 30 at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Colton Point Road in Avenue.

โ€œ[An] Unknown suspect [or suspects] placed an incendiary device inside the mailbox,โ€ Nelson stated. โ€œThe device ignited, causing the mail inside to be burned and destroyed.โ€ย 

No injuries were reported. The blaze was discovered by the homeowner. No firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The estimated loss is $25.

No arrests have been made at this time. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the state fire marshalโ€™s Southern Regional Office at 443-550-6833.
