Maryland State Fire Marshall’s along with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office are investigating an incident in Waldorf that left a man with burns to over 50 percent of his body.

Fifteen firefighters from the Hugesville VFD responded to the 14720 Bassford Road in Waldorf on Thursday, March 18 around 12:40 p.m. for the report of a fire.

Investigation revealed the homeowner, identified as 72-year-old, Joseph Randolph Tolson was burning yard debris and decided to use an accelerant to get the fire going. The fire ignited his clothing causing burns to 50% of his body. Mr. Tolson was flown by MSP to Washington Hospital Center for his injuries.

The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental.
