ANNAPOLIS, Md. – A handful of Maryland lawmakers want to level the playing field when it comes to girls’ high school sports.
They’re sponsoring a bill called the Fairness in Girls Sports Act. It says that girls’ JV and Varsity sports teams, on a high school level, should be limited to biological girls, not transgender females.
Delegate Kathy Szeliga, a Republican from Baltimore County, held a press conference in Annapolis on Wednesday to discuss the bill and testify on behalf of the measure.
“This is so important. That we are keeping a fair playing field. This is science. It’s biology. Boys are faster, stronger, they jump higher. They have more muscle. They have bigger cardiovascular systems, bigger bones. And testosterone, among other things. And it’s not just protecting girls’ athletic opportunities, but protecting them from injuries,” said Szeliga.
Szeliga referenced a few instances in the past that raised major concerns.
“In New England, there was a boy playing against the girls’ hockey team. He hit the puck so hard, he knocked the girl’s teeth out.”
She referred to another incident involving a boy on a girls’ volleyball team, in which the boy spiked the ball so hard, that a girl suffered a brain injury.
“As a society, we can celebrate the differences of individuals but hold bodies accountable in sports. The future of every female athlete counts on it,” said Szeliga.
Several Maryland high school girls’ sports teams were at the press conference to show their support of the bill.
If passed, the law would go into effect on July 1st.
