ST. MARY’S COUNTY, Maryland — The Naval Air Station Patuxent River celebrated the 245th birthday of the United States Navy on Tuesday. The celebration was scaled down due to COVID-19. Naval personnel still managed to celebrate with a small, socially-distanced event.

Sticking with tradition the senior officer, NAS Patuxent commanding officer Capt. John Brabazon, and the youngest sailor, Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Eric James, cut the birthday cake together.

Retired Navy Captain and former NAS Patuxent River commanding officer Captain Glen Ives was a special guest speaker. Ives spoke to the crowd about how the Navy’s camaraderie has helped ensure victory over the past 245 years.

PS2 Kylaya Mannings, YN2 Susana Mataley, and ET2 Samuel Leslie worked together to coordinate the event and ensure safety protocols were followed.

The theme for this year’s celebration was “Victory at Sea.” Presenters spoke about the Navy’s valiant efforts to protect America during World War II.
