Maryland Tourism Council Supports Power of Travel Coalition

Annapolis, MD

โ€”The Maryland Tourism Council has joined the Power of Travel Coalition, a new project of the U. S. Travel Association designed to defend and strengthen the traveling community. The Coalitionโ€™s efforts are focused on rallying travel and tourism businesses and associations to join the growing voice of tourism, in particular during National Travel and Tourism Week, May 7-15, 2011. National Travel and Tourism Week has been supported since its inception by the Maryland Tourism Council and its members through Association events and events held by individual members in their counties, cities and businesses. Throughout the country where events are held, the intention is to demonstrate travelโ€™s positive impact on local workers, businesses and economiesโ€”something that can be evidenced in recent reports from the U.S. Travel Association.

The Power of Travel Coalition is comprised of over 10 million working individuals from all aspects of the travel and tourism industry such as hotel and lodging, theme parks, restaurants and tour operations. The Coalition serves as a united voice and resource for information on the power of travel. Through a dedicated microsite, travelers can access information on the impact of travel on the U.S. workforce and economy. Those who join the Coalition can use the siteโ€™s information to educate travelers and help promote the power of tourism. The core message of the Coalition reinforces the value of the travel industry: Americaโ€™s travel industry is responsible for more than $1 trillion in the U.S. economy; 10.1 million American workers are employed by travel; and, one out of every nine jobs in the U.S. depends on travel.

At a national level, the data makes an impressive case for the impact of travel. The U.S. Travel Associationโ€™s current report reflects numbers from 2009:
