LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — The outdoor pool at the new YMCA Chesapeake facility in Lexington Park is officially open for the summer season, and YMCA officials are seeking additional lifeguards to help support growing aquatic programs while construction continues on the new recreation center.

The outdoor pool, formerly known to many local residents as the Great Mills Pool, is now operating under YMCA management and serving families throughout St. Mary’s County. As interest in swimming lessons, aquatic fitness classes and recreational swim opportunities continues to grow, YMCA leaders say they need more lifeguards to ensure safe operations.

“We’re open at the YMCA outdoor pool,” a YMCA representative said in a recent email to The BayNet. “However, our reach for guards seems thwarted and we very much seek out individuals who may need training and would benefit from employment in our community.”

The YMCA is encouraging community members to consider becoming lifeguards, including high school and college students seeking summer employment, as well as adults looking for part-time opportunities. Training and certification assistance may be available for qualified candidates who are not already certified.

The staffing push comes as the organization prepares for increased demand at the new Lexington Park YMCA campus. While construction on the main facility continues, the outdoor pool has already become a hub for summer activities and aquatic programming.

YMCA officials say lifeguards play a critical role in maintaining a safe environment for swimmers while also serving as leaders and role models for young people participating in programs.

In addition to competitive pay and flexible schedules, lifeguarding provides valuable training in water rescue, first aid, CPR and emergency response skills that can benefit participants throughout their lives.

The YMCA hopes increased community awareness will help attract enough qualified applicants to support both current operations and future aquatic programming as the new facility continues to expand services.

Residents interested in learning more about lifeguard positions or certification opportunities are encouraged to contact the Lexington Park YMCA or visit the YMCA Chesapeake careers page.
