โOur History is Our Strengthโ is the theme of this yearโs St. Maryโs County Commission for Women annual dinner banquet, set for Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the Dr. James Forrest Career and Technology Center in Leonardtown.
The Commission will recognize outstanding charitable and civic service to the community with the 2011 Woman of the Year and 2011 Women of Tomorrow awards.ย Nominations are now being sought and all nominees will be recognized at the banquet.ย
To submit a nomination, please call the Department of Human Services at (301) 475-4200 ext. 1689 to request a form.ย The nomination forms are also available at the Commission for Women website. Click on Boards and Commissions on the countyโs website at www.stmarysmd.com . Requests may also be made via e-mail to Commission Chair Norma Pipkin at commissionforwomen@stmarysmd.com. Deadline for submissions is Thursday, February 15, 2011. Nominations can be mailed or faxed to (301) 475-4268.
All proceeds from the Banquet will go towards the Jane Hale Sypher Scholarship at the College of Southern Maryland, Leonardtown. Named in honor of the former Dean of CSM Leonardtown and community activist, the scholarship is awarded to women returning to college.
If you are submitting a nominee for the Woman of the Year and/or the Woman of Tomorrow (grades 9-12) award, the Commission for Women requests that each sponsoring organization or individual purchase a ticket for their nominee.ย Please list your nominee as one of the persons attending the banquet.
To request tickets for the banquet, contact the Department of Human Services.ย Tickets are $20 per person and reservations must be made by Monday, March 4, 2011.
The Commission for Women is a county commission which was created to study issues of concern to St. Mary’s County including, but not limited to, employment, education, child care, health, women in elected office, financial management, entrepreneurship, banking and credit, housing, land ownership, domestic violence, and legal rights; recommend to the Board of County Commissioners, when appropriate, course of action dealing with those and other issues having high priority and importance to the women of St. Mary’s County; educate the public regarding those and other issues having high priority and importance to the women of St. Mary’s County; work with, support, and build coalitions with other agencies, public and private, dealing with those and other issues having high priority and importance to the women of St. Mary’s County; and represent St. Mary’s County to the Maryland Commission for Women.
