PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County’s Board of Education (BOE) recognized two Northern High School students, Kayla Scott and Jake Kurtz, for their athletic achievements this year during their April 23 meeting.

Kayla Scott, a senior, won the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association (MPSSAA) 2025-2026 championships for indoor 3S shot put. Scott was the MPSSAA 3A East Indoor Regional and SMAC runner-up in shot put. She participated in track and field teams throughout high school. In their resolution, the BOE thanked Scott for her “years of leadership and hard work.”

Northern High freshman Jake Kurtz earned recognition from the BOE for his MPSSAA championship win for wrestling in the 106-pound division. Kurtz was also the 2026 MPSSAA 2A-1A East Regional champion, the 2025 Clash at the Creek Tournament champion and the 2026 Easton New Year’s Brawl champion. Kurtz ended his varsity season with a record of 50-2, finishing as the No. 4 ranked 106-pound public school wrestler in Maryland. Kurtz is coached by Tony Hipszer, Mike Yankanich and Mike Dowling, and in their recognition, the BOE commended his family and coaches for “an outstanding year which resulted in amazing achievement.”

Scott and Kurtz add their achievements to a long list of accomplished Calvert County student athletes this school year. Calvert County Public Schools have celebrated wins in football, baseball and softball this year and in past years, and continue looking to invest in athletics and the students who dedicate their time to success in their sports.
