Authorities in Calvert County confirm one person sustained serious burns at a house on Heather Court in Chesapeake Beach during the early morning hours of Tuesday, Sept. 17. Units were dispatched to the house at approximately 12:45 a.m.
The unidentified elderly male was flown by Maryland State Police Trooper 7 to Med Star’s Burn Center in Washington, DC, the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department (Company 1) reported. Fire officials said the man reportedly fell asleep with a lit cigarette. The burning cigarette ignited the man’s clothes. Company 1 reported the man sustained second and third-degree burns on a majority of his body. Family members quickly put out the fire by placing the man in a shower and turning on the water.
No structural damage to the house was reported as a result of the fire.
