At 12:58 a.m. Aug. 2, Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Officer D. Major conducted a traffic stop on a Honda in the 3000 block of Route 301 in Waldorf for displaying expired tags.

While Officer Major was speaking with the driver, the driver suddenly sped away and one of the Hondaโ€™s rear tires ran over the officerโ€™s feet.

Officer Major returned to his police cruiser and pursued the Honda for a short distance until the driver exited the vehicle and fled into the woods. Officer Major then pursued the driver on foot and apprehended him. The driver struggled briefly but was ultimately arrested.

A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed two 9mm live rounds and marijuana. The accused, Dion Lamont Johnson, 37, of Waldorf, had an expired Washington, D.C., driverโ€™s license.

Johnson was charged with reckless endangerment, first-degree assault, assaulting a police officer, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest, failure to stop for a police officer, driving without a license and fleeing and eluding. He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner.
