PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert Elementary and Calvert Country School sites at 1450 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick will now be considered Priority Funding Areas (PFAs) in preparation for site redevelopment. Long-term construction projects in the district include replacing Calvert Elementary with a new building.
A PFA is an area designated by local governments as a place where they would like to see future state investment. According to Calvert County Public Schools Director of Planning and Construction Shuchita Warner, designation of the site as a PFA is one of several steps they are taking as they look toward a new Calvert Elementary in the coming years. Warner also said the district plans for Calvert County School, a special education center, to be a co-located space with Calvert Elementary. The “co-location” is “one of the only ways to get state funding,” Warner said.
Warner also said they were looking at several options for the old Calvert Elementary building when the new school is built. One option is to use the old building as a swing space to support future projects. But the use for the site itself will not be anything outside what it is currently; they may update the schools, but there will be only schools on that site.
The site was eligible for PFA designation under Md. Code, Finance and Procurement Article, § 5-7B-03(c). To get this certification from the Planning and Zoning Commission, the site had to meet a certain set of criteria. The site was designated as Tier A1, indicating a growth area not for residential use. It is also tagged for water and sewer redevelopment between 2029 and 2031, and the principal use is classified as “employment.”
The Planning and Zoning Commission confirmed that the site met the criteria to be classified as a PFA and aligned with the Calvert County Comprehensive Plan.
