Maryland Natural Resources Police recover body from Chesapeake Bay

Point Lookout, MD โ€“ What was intended to be a day of enjoyment in a nearby park for a Calvert County man, a teenage nephew and 8-year-old son led to a grisly discovery Sunday, Nov. 27. The location of a body at Point Lookout State Park in St. Maryโ€™s County was made shortly before 1 p.m.

The Calvert man, who asked that his name not be released, told TheBayNet.com that he was taking photographs on the parkโ€™s causeway, when his son called out that he saw a manโ€™s body washed up on the rocks. โ€œWe thought it was an 8-year-oldโ€™s imagination,โ€ the man said. However when the two adults took a look for themselves they found the boy was correct. The boyโ€™s father then called 911.

The body has since been identified as Ashley Vaughn Thompson, 31 of Oxon Hill, who was reported missing to authorities by his mother Nov. 13. According to Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) spokeswoman Candy Thomson, Ashley Thompsonโ€™s motor vehicle was found abandoned at the Point Lookout boat ramp Nov. 15. For two days NRP divers, K9 units and helicopter crew conducted a search of the water and shoreline but there was no sign of Ashley Thompson. Natural Resources Police then turned over their information on the case to the Prince Georgeโ€™s County Police Department.

St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Department detectives are conducting a death investigation. Thompsonโ€™s body was transported to Baltimore for an autopsy.
Shortly after ย NRP and St. Maryโ€™s County authorities began their investigation following Sundayโ€™s discovery, and a determination was made as to whose body had been discovered, information was released on Twitter that the body was not that of a missing fisherman who disappeared after a boating accident on the Potomac River the previous weekend.

Anyone who might have additional information that could aid investigators is asked to call St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office Detective Skyler LeFave at 301-475-4200, ext. 1983.
