LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles County Sheriff’s Office has a new way to cool down the community. Deputies have transformed a 2003 Chevy Astro van into a “Pops With Cops” truck, handing out free popsicles as a way to connect with kids and families. The project came together for just $20, thanks to the efforts of youth engagement officers and the fleet management team.

In only a week, the van was reimagined with custom graphics designed by Cpl. Jackson and upgraded lighting by fleet management. The repurposed vehicle is now serving free ice cream and popsicles to bring young people and families together at local events. It is the first truck of its kind in the county, debuting Aug. 30 at the summer neighborhood pop-up block party at Wakefield Terrace in Waldorf. Many residents also saw it in action at the Charles County Fair, where families lined up to enjoy a free treat from their local deputies.

“This project shows the heart of our agency — working together, thinking outside the box, and finding ways to build connections,” Sheriff Troy D. Berry said.

The truck will be featured at Friday Night Lights & Sirens, National Night Out, the Charles County Fair and other community gatherings. Officials say there’s no wrong time for ice cream, especially when it doubles as a tool for outreach.

The Youth Engagement Unit includes officers who mentor, guide and build positive relationships with young residents. The team partners with schools, families and community organizations to encourage responsible decision-making, foster trust and provide support. Along with school visits and after-school programs, the ice cream truck is one of many creative methods used to reach youth throughout Charles County.
