Cobb Island, MD – A Potomac River plane crash near Dahlgren prompted a multi-agency rescue Saturday afternoon. Emergency crews responded Saturday afternoon to a reported aircraft down in the Potomac River near Green Buoy #29, just off the shoreline from the Naval Support Facility Dahlgren in Virginia.
Initial reports indicated a larger aircraft, but responding units confirmed it was a small seaplane with a single occupant. Rescue Boat 6 from Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department remained on scene for several hours, providing marine support alongside partner agencies from Maryland and Virginia.
The pilot was removed from the water and transported by Maryland State Police Trooper 7 to a regional burn center for evaluation. Recovery operations for the aircraft have been postponed due to light and location; the plane is expected to be removed from the river Sunday.
Maryland State Police – La Plata Barrack is leading the investigation into the cause of the incident.
This was the second marine-related response of the day for Cobb Island crews, who earlier assisted with a separate distress call off Coltons Point in St. Mary’s County. That incident involved a boat but no reported injuries or hazards.
