CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — A 27-year-old man charged in a fatal shooting in Charles County has waived his right to an extradition hearing and will be returned to Maryland to face charges, according to court proceedings held Thursday.
Dayton James Webber, a professional cornhole player who is also a quadruple amputee, appeared via video in Albemarle County court, where he agreed to be transferred to Maryland authorities. He remains in custody in Virginia as arrangements are made for his return.
Webber was arrested in Albemarle County as a fugitive from justice after being located in Charlottesville, where investigators found his vehicle and took him into custody at a nearby hospital while he was seeking treatment for a medical issue.
The charges stem from a March 22, 2026, shooting in La Plata. According to charging documents, La Plata Town Police were flagged down around 10:35 p.m. near the intersection of Radio Station Road and La Plata Road in reference to a shooting involving occupants inside a vehicle.
Investigators allege Webber was driving a white Tesla when an argument broke out between him and a front-seat passenger. Witnesses told police the dispute escalated while the vehicle was in motion before gunfire erupted inside the car.
According to court records, two passengers who had been picked up from a workplace were in the back seat at the time. After the shooting, Webber stopped the vehicle and asked the passengers to help remove the victim. The witnesses refused, exited the vehicle, and flagged down police.
Authorities say Webber then drove away with the victim still inside.
Approximately two hours later, at about 12:41 a.m. on March 23, a resident returning home discovered the victim’s body along Newport Church Road in the Charlotte Hall area. Deputies responded and confirmed the victim, identified as 27-year-old Bradrick Michael Wells of Waldorf, was deceased.
Charging documents indicate witnesses later identified Webber as the shooter. Court records also reflect an additional assault charge involving a second male victim connected to the incident.
Webber is expected to be transported back to Maryland, where he will face charges related to the fatal shooting. Further court proceedings in Charles County are anticipated following his return.
