When Duty Calls… Even for America’s Mascot

DUNKIRK, Md. – On Thursday, Feb. 26, at 11:49 a.m., Calvert County Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Basham spotted something unusual along the wood line in the Dunkirk Town Center… a bald eagle standing still on the ground.

Now, eagles are known for soaring. Not so much for loitering.

Realizing something wasn’t right, Lt. Basham contacted Calvert County Animal Control. ACO Bell-Bussler quickly responded, and when the eagle tried to hop into the woods but couldn’t make it over a log (we’ve all had those days), it became clear the bird needed help.

With teamwork and care, the eagle was safely secured using a net. Upon examination, Animal Control observed an injured and infected left wing.

Thanks to our partners at Owl Moon Raptor Center, who responded to transport this very important patient to their rehabilitation center. With expert care, we’re hopeful this symbol of freedom will soon be soaring high over Calvert County once again.

It took sharp eyes, quick action, and great teamwork to make this rescue possible. Today, we didn’t just protect and serve; we protected a national treasure. ❤️🇺🇸🦅Friends of the Linda L. Kelley Animal Shelter#calvertcounty#ProtectAndServe#BaldEagle#EagleRescue

  1. I just love owl moon raptor center. They were able to take an injured vulture I came across a few years ago.
