NORTH BEACH, Md. — A group of local moon enthusiasts is inviting the community to gather on the North Beach boardwalk this Saturday, Jan. 3, to take part in a “community full moon howl” in celebration of the Wolf Moon—the first full moon of the year.
The event is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. at 9023 Bay Avenue and is open to both residents and visitors from surrounding areas.
A representative for the group wrote to The BayNet that there are many similar events around the world, and while the “wolf moon” name doesn’t have anything to do with wolves, the first full moon of the year is traditionally associated with community and midwinter reflection.
When asked what they want people to get out of the event, the representative said, “Hope, a sense of connection, shared presence, community, maybe a post-holiday release and mental recovery … even just for a few minutes. It’s also largely accessible and inclusive, free to all ages and abilities, to mystics, and to scientists.”
Organizers also wrote in a Facebook post that “local residents and visitors from surrounding areas are all welcome to gather, welcome the first full moon of the year, and share a playful, moonlit moment together.”
The post went on to say that spirited pack leaders will guide the group and lead a collective countdown to the howl as the moon appears, so everyone can join in at once, and that attendees are encouraged to channel their inner wolf: wolf costumes, fuzzy ears, fangs, astronomy bling, glow sticks, LED accessories, moon rechargeables, and other glowing or sparkling moon-friendly gear are strongly encouraged.
After the howl, attendees are invited to meet up at local restaurants to warm up and get to know each other.
“Bring your voice, your layers, and your sense of fun — and let the Wolf Moon hear North Beach howl,” the group posted.
