The Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office is participating in a statewide initiative to reduce traffic fatalities on Maryland roadways during the month of August.ย ย  A review of Maryland crash data determined that August typically has a higher number of crashes, injuries and fatalities.

This effort to increase public awareness of the need to drive sober will also be supported by national, statewide and local media, in support of Marylandโ€™s โ€œCheckpoint Strikeforceโ€ campaign, which kicks off on August 20th.

Calvert County residents and motorists can anticipate increased public awareness and enforcement efforts, especially during late afternoon or early evening hours, and on weekends.ย ย  Roadways that will see increased enforcement efforts include Md. Route 260, Md. Route 261 and adjoining roadways.

โ€œOur goal is zero fatalities for the month of August.ย  We will be looking for all impaired drivers and motorcyclists during the crackdown and will arrest anyoneย we find impaired โ€” regardless of age, vehicle type, or time of dayโ€ stated Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans.ย

This effort is supported by $13,000 in grant funding from the Maryland State Highway Administrationโ€™s Highway Safety Office.
