LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Community members, local leaders and volunteers gathered at Nicolet Park on June 3 to share ideas, discuss future improvements and help shape the next chapter of one of St. Mary’s County’s oldest and most beloved parks.
Among the most frequently discussed topics was the future of Nicolet Park’s basketball court. Residents, volunteers and community leaders shared ideas for upgrades to the court, emphasizing its importance as a gathering place for local youth and families.
Commissioner Scott Ostrow said the county plans to resurface the basketball court, with work expected to occur toward the end of next year.

Among the improvements already completed is the park’s renovated skate park, a project Ostrow said originated directly from community feedback.
“The skateboard association came to one of my very first town halls and said, ‘We need you to do something for us,'” Ostrow said in an interview with The BayNet. “So we got right on it.”

Ostrow also described Nicolet Park as a unique community asset with deep roots in St. Mary’s County.
“Nicolet Park is the oldest park in St. Mary’s County, and it has a very special feel about it,” Ostrow said. “It’s a smaller park. It’s a really great community park, really centrally located, and it’s beautiful.”

Additional improvements are already on the horizon.
A new spray park is scheduled for construction next year, replacing the current facility with a larger, more environmentally friendly design featuring enhanced water conservation technology.
“We were able to find funding for that,” Ostrow said. “It’s going to be bigger and better. It will have more water conservation and recycling. It’ll be much better for the environment and much better for the community.”

The current spray park remains a popular attraction during the summer months, drawing families and children seeking relief from the heat and a splash of fun.

The projects are part of ongoing efforts by St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks to modernize facilities while preserving the character and accessibility that make neighborhood parks important gathering places.
The strong turnout at the community event highlighted the role parks continue to play in bringing residents together. From children enjoying the playground and spray park to skateboarders using the renovated skate facility, county officials say Nicolet Park remains a cornerstone of recreation in the Lexington Park community.

With improvements continuing over the next several years, residents can expect Nicolet Park to remain a destination for outdoor recreation, community connection and family-friendly activities for generations to come.
