The Calvert County Commissioners broke slightly with a much-anticipated Yuletide tradition Tuesday, Dec. 17 but may have begun a new one.

The commissioners meeting prior to Christmas usually means a visit from Santa Claus. In the past the commissioners or county government staff have jumped on Santaโ€™s knee to tell him what he or she wanted for Christmas.

This year the board decided to invite clients of The Arc of Southern Maryland to visit with Santa during the meeting.

The Arc of Southern Maryland, as its web site states, โ€œpromotes community involvement, independence and personal success for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.โ€

โ€œThanks for inviting us today,โ€ said The Arc of Southern Maryland Executive Director Harriet S. Yaffe. โ€œI wish more people could have been here today.โ€

Commissioner Susan Shaw [R] commended Yaffe and her โ€œincredibly dedicated staff.โ€

Santaโ€™s generously was abundant, too, as he promised to deliver the goods to everyone who asked for something. Plus, he and his elf distributed candy canes to everyone in the commissionersโ€™ hearing roomโ€”including members of the press.
