ANNAPOLIS, Md. – With long-anticipated electricity rate hikes set to hit Maryland families this summer, Democrats in the Maryland General Assembly sent a letter to federal energy regulators demanding they step in to curb rate increases. The letter comes just weeks after the legislature adjourned its 90-day session—without passing a single measure to meaningfully reduce energy costs for families and businesses.
Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey and Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready issued the following statements in response.
Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey
“This is the latest episode in a now all-too-familiar show: Maryland Democrats break it, then beg someone else to fix it. Democrats had 90 days to do something about rising electric bills. They had complete control of the agenda and every opportunity to bring Marylanders relief. Instead, they sat on their hands—and now they’re firing off letters to Washington like they had nothing to do with soaring energy prices.
Let’s be real: this is political damage control. They passed expensive energy mandates, ignored Republican calls for affordability and balance, and now that the costs are hitting people’s wallets, they want someone else to clean up their mess. Marylanders aren’t buying it—and neither are we.”
Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready
“Maryland’s soaring electric rates are not a mystery—they’re a direct result of bad policy choices made by Democratic leaders. Their obsession with ‘green goals’ has come at the expense of energy reliability and affordability.
Now, plants they forced offline are still running because the grid can’t survive without them, and ratepayers are stuck paying hundreds of millions for that mistake. Instead of taking responsibility and offering solutions, Democrats are writing letters to federal regulators like innocent bystanders. It’s insulting. Marylanders deserve better than a government that shrugs off the consequences of its own decisions.”
Senate Republicans don’t believe in passing the buck. We believe in fixing the policies that broke the system in the first place. Our members will continue to advocate for policies that prioritize reliable, affordable energy for Maryland residents—without pushing the cost of political theater onto working families.

Yup.
the governor doesn’t have nearly enough time to review bills before veto. Needs much more time. The time is appropriate if there are under 100 pieces, but with so much stuff coming out of the GA, why not extend the veto deadline until December? Not enough time! Veto because time is insufficient.
No Moore Spending!!
