CALIFORNIA, Md. — The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for much of Maryland and the District of Columbia, in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday, June 19.
Scattered to numerous severe thunderstorms are expected between 2 and 7 p.m. as a strong cold front moves through the region. Forecasters say damaging winds are the main threat.
Earlier in the day, high temperatures soared into the upper 80s and mid-90s. Combined with increasing humidity, heat indices approached 100 degrees, creating dangerous conditions ahead of the storms.

The watch covers 14 counties, including Anne Arundel, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Frederick, Washington, and St. Mary’s, along with Baltimore City and the District of Columbia.
Officials advise residents to stay alert, limit outdoor activities, and monitor forecasts throughout the evening.
