The St. Maryโ€™s County Sheriffโ€™s Office will be conducting a proactive traffic enforcement initiative beginning Nov. 17 to address numerous citizens complaints regarding unregistered vehicles (All Terrain Vehicles, Golf Carts, Mopeds, etc.) being operated on St. Maryโ€™s County highways.

Maryland Law states a person shall not operate an unregistered vehicle on the highway (shoulder to shoulder). Therefore, they may not be operated on the highways of St. Maryโ€™s County. ATVโ€™s are specifically designed for off road use and are to be operated on private property only with the permission of the property owner.

Slow Moving Emblems – If a vehicle operates at a speed of 25 MPH or less you are required, by law, to display a slow moving emblem. However, having this emblem displayed on the rear of an ATV or golf cart does NOT allow a person to operate the vehicle on a highway in St. Maryโ€™s County, unless the vehicle is being used to facilitate farm related operations, construction, maintenance or repair work at a facility.

This goal of this initiative is to save lives and increase the safety of the driving public in St. Maryโ€™s County through awareness and enforcement.
