ST. LEONARD, Md. — Firefighters battled flames shooting through the roof of a St. Leonard home late Friday night, displacing one resident and causing an estimated $200,000 in damage, officials said.
Volunteers from the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company, along with mutual aid crews from Prince Frederick, Solomons, Huntingtown, and Dunkirk, were dispatched around 10:52 p.m. May 8, 2026, to the 5600 block of Douglas Street for a reported residential structure fire.
Engine 71 arrived to find heavy fire coming from the attic and through the roof of the single family residence, prompting firefighters to begin an aggressive interior and exterior attack to stop the blaze from spreading further. Chief Weems established command alongside Assistant Chief DeVries shortly after arriving on scene.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control in approximately 20 minutes while preventing additional extension into the home, according to the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company.
Investigators with the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal said the fire originated in the attic. The preliminary cause remains undetermined and is still under investigation.
All occupants and pets safely escaped the home and no injuries were reported. One resident was displaced by the fire and is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
Damage to the structure was estimated at $150,000, with an additional $50,000 in damage to the home’s contents. Officials also confirmed working smoke alarms were present inside the residence.
