CHESAPEAKE BEACH, Md. — Calvert County Sheriff’s Office officials confirmed Thursday at the Chesapeake Beach Town Council meeting that a woman found deceased in the Chesapeake Bay earlier this month has been ruled a suicide.
Speaking before the council, Cpl. Norton of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said investigators reviewed video footage showing the woman entering the water voluntarily near the rock jetty along Atlantic Avenue in North Beach, close to the town’s fishing pier.
“Based on video evidence from the boardwalk, it is being determined as a suicide,” Norton said. “She went out on the rock jetty where it’s deeper, and you could actually see her throw herself in. She could not swim.”
The woman, identified as a Prince George’s County resident, was recovered the morning of Oct. 5 after witnesses reported seeing a body about 20 to 25 feet offshore. Emergency units from Calvert, Talbot and Dorchester counties responded to the 9000 block of Atlantic Avenue around 8:30 a.m. after a call to 911 reported a possible drowning.
At the time, dispatchers described the incident as a coastal water rescue, with the individual visible but motionless between old rock formations and a seawall near the boardwalk.
Norton told council members the ongoing investigation is nearing completion, adding that no foul play is suspected. “There was nothing suspicious, nothing like that,” he said. “They’re just wrapping up the investigation now.”
The update came as part of Norton’s monthly law enforcement report to the town, which outlined 186 calls for service in September, a slight decrease from August, and included incidents ranging from theft and fraud to animal cruelty and DUI arrests.
The council thanked Norton and the sheriff’s office for continued patrols through the fall season.
Authorities have not released the woman’s name, and no additional information has been made public pending final case documentation.
