LEXINGTON PARK, Md. – Week 1 was not kind to St. Maryโs County High School football teams with both Leonardtown and Great Mills being shutout and Chopticon losing by a pair of scores.
Leonardtown- 0 @ Lackey- 56
Leonardtown played at Lackey over the weekend, and there was not much positive to take away. Lackey set a school rushing record with 546 yards on the ground; they eclipsed the previous record of 477 by 69 yards. Lackey is an excellent team with several senior contributors and is picked by many to repeat as SMAC Chesapeake champions. Leonardtown was able to record one sack, by senior Joshua Eby, and one interception, by senior Zion Ray.
Leonardtown plays its first home game on Saturday against a Calvert team who also lost last week, though it was in a low scoring, close, game. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.
Great Mills-0ย @ Suitland-21
Great Mills didnโt do much against Suitland this past weekend. The Hornets rushed for only two yards and threw for 57. Junior quarterback Terrell London was a perfect 4 for four passing and junior running back Darrius Williams lead the team in rushing with 27.
The Hornets play against a motivated Thomas Stone team who were upset over the weekend. The game will be played at Great Mills Friday, Sept. 7 at 6 p.m.
Oxon Hill-26ย @ Chopticon-14
Chopticon did not play a bad game by any means. The team passed and rushed for over 100 yards, with junior Dominic Crampton passing for 133 yards and two touchdowns, and sophomore running back Devyn Vukovich lead the team with 62 rushing yards on 13 carries. Chopticon was able to score first, but they only scored one more time in the 3rd quarter.
The Braves faceoff against La Plata at home on Friday, with the kickoff set for 6 p.m. Chopticon will try to notch their first win against a La Plata team who is coming off of a dominant performance against Crossland, winning that game 48-6.
