LEONARDTOWN, Md. – Superintendent of Schools, Dr. J. Scott Smith, announces the administrative appointments made by the Board of Education at its meeting of July 30, 2025.

The Board appointed Mr. Christopher Adams as Assistant Principal, 11 month, at Chopticon High School. Mr. Adams holds both a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Mr. Adams currently serves as an Instructional Resource Teacher, 10 month, at Esperanza Middle School.

Mr. Richard Carey has been appointed as Academic Dean, 12 month, at the Chesapeake Public Charter School. Mr. Carey holds a Master’s Degree from Towson University, and a Bachelor’s Degree from West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Carey currently serves as a Physical Education Teacher, 10 month, at the Chesapeake Public Charter School.

Ms. Ashley Kurtz has been appointed Supervisor of Instruction, Early Childhood Instruction & Initiatives, 12 month, in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Ms. Kurtz holds a Master’s Degree from the College of Notre Dame, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Salisbury University. Ms. Kurtz currently serves as an Instructional Resource Teacher, 10 month, at George Washington Carver Elementary School.

Mr. Matthew Rodriguez has been appointed Assistant Principal, 11 month, at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School. Mr. Rodriguez holds a Master’s Degree from McDaniel College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Kean University. Mr. Rodriguez currently serves as an Administrative Intern, 10 month, at Chopticon High School.
The Board of Education was informed of the following Administrative Transfer:
Dr. Laura Carpenter will transfer from Assistant Principal, 12 month, at Benjamin Banneker Elementary School, to Supervisor of Special Education, 12 month, in the Department of Special Education.
Mr. Adams’, Mr. Carey’s, Mr. Rodriguez’s appointment, and Dr. Carpenter’s transfer will become effective August 1, 2025.
Ms. Kurtz’s appointment will become effective August 4, 2025.
