LEONARDTOWN, MD — The annual Elementary Mathematics Challenge Competition, co-sponsored by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, for fourth and fifth grade students, was held at Esperanza Middle School on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Nineteen elementary schools (16 public and 3 non public) sent teams of seven fourth grade students and seven fifth grade students to compete. The competition consisted of a team portion and an individual portion. During the team portion, team members collaborated to answer several multiple step mathematics problems. Individual team members then took a test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions. The scores of the top five finishers on the individual tests from each school were combined to make the individual school total. The individual school total was combined with the team score to make the final school team score.
